Thinking about fun things to do for a memorable family vacation? Do not worry, as I have curated a list of places to visit and things you can do when you are on a family holiday - suitable and perfect for all ages. Sometimes we spend a fortune on a vacation and only include top tourist places in our travel itinerary. Planning a trip by taking into account all family members’ interests makes everyone happy and this is what we want from a vacation. Believe me, it’s not that easy as it sounds. Proper planning is very crucial for such vacations to make them unforgettable and fun-filled.

I love family vacations! I constantly look for places that are best for kids and adults alike. In fact, we started travelling extensively after having my first kid. Since then, we always go on vacation near or far as a family.

Here are the fun things that you can do during your family vacation and make the best memories:

1. All-Inclusive Family Resorts

Amanvana Resort

We all get tired at some point being too busy in our daily responsibilities - be it for work or home, and need a relaxing break. Sometimes we brainstorm too much to plan a vacation that suits every family member’s needs. In that case, an all-inclusive-family holiday comes to our rescue - it’s quicker, easier, and cheaper to organise.

I remember planning my Coorg trip when I was five-month pregnant and wanted a peaceful holiday. We booked a lovely resort with all the activities for adults and kids alike. I can’t even tell how relaxing it was. The resort was surrounded by coffee plantations and we enjoyed many activities without leaving the resort premises.

2. Visiting a Beach

Making Sand Castle at Miami Beach

Needless to say, beach holidays are something that every family longs for. I have visited many beaches around the world with my kids and enjoyed each and every one of them. Not only does it provides families to enjoy an array of exciting activities, but it is also suitable for children of all ages. As a grown-up, you sit on a beach chair with your cocktail and watch your kid building a sandcastle - sounds cool right!

Whether you book a beach resort or drive to the nearest beach I am sure you will enjoy this kind of holiday. I am pretty sure neither you nor your kids are going to complain about it.

3. Visit a National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

If you think it’s been ages since you got a sight of tall trees, or have listened to chirping birds and spent time in nature, then national parks are a great option for your family. They give a wonderful opportunity to learn about nature, science, conservation, animal, and history. Whether you hire a professional guide while visiting any national park or try to explore on your own, it’s going to be a fun trip for each member of your family.

I have visited few national parks in the USA as well as in the UK with my kids, and those were some of the most memorable trips of us as a family. Seeing your kids running around the park and exploring nature gives you immense satisfaction as a parent.

4. Visiting a Farm or Petting zoo

Strawberry Farm, Austin

If you have young kids, then this would be a magical place for them. Most farms have activities that keep the entire family entertained. My favourite part of visiting a farm is picking fresh fruits and vegetables with my kids. I still remember the moment when I was picking fresh strawberries on a farm in Austin, Texas, and eating them right away.

Most farms also have a petting zoo and kids love feeding the cows, sheep, and ducks. You literally are going to find yourself dragging them out from this place and keep saying we will come again.

5. Amusement Parks

Disney World Epcot World Showcase

Kids love going to parks full of rides and plenty of space to run around. Amusement parks are an elaborate version of your local city park or playground, so why not pay a visit to this magical place! No need to mention if your kids overhear you planning an amusement park visit they will definitely jump with joy.

We visited Disney World, a popular theme-based amusement park in Florida, with our kid and still remember that holiday. An amusement park is a wonderful place for a family vacation, usually providing attractions that cater to a variety of age groups.

6. Museums

The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

So you have one inquisitive kid in your family who is always up for visiting historical places and curious about everything including history, science, and culture! If this is the case, then you should definitely plan a trip to a museum. Museums are a great place to learn about human history and many other things and are an exciting place for everyone.

During our Edinburgh trip, we visited the National Museum of Scotland, one of the finest museums in the UK. We also visited The Houston Museum of Natural Science in the USA and loved the spectacular collection of mineral specimens, a dinosaur skeleton, space-station models, a planetarium and an IMAX theatre. The special attraction of this museum is a six-story butterfly centre where you can see colourful butterflies.  It was a wonderful experience for us, especially the butterfly exhibit.

There are excellent museums and galleries all over the world, and the best part is that entry to the majority of these is totally free.

7. Family Road Trips

Road Trip

I think every family should go on a road trip once. This is the kind of experience that your kids will remember as the happiest moment of their lives. We went on many road trips and can’t even explain those joyful moments in words.

The joy of a road trip starts right from the planning of the trip. And the moment you start your journey you enjoy everything - like chatting while looking at roadside scenery, playing games, stopping at roadside eateries or rest areas.

8. Camping

One of the best outdoor activities that you can do with your family is Camping. If you are living in a place where you can find a decent campsite which is safe, then you should definitely try camping.

I think it’s the cheapest and best getaway for the entire family. I understand not everyone likes to spend a night in the woods but if you do and haven’t tried camping yet, then go for it. There are many kinds of camping options available nowadays. Choose what suits your family and then plan one. Read all about our camping experiences.

9. Arboretum and Botanical Garden

The Rock Garden in Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

In my opinion, an arboretum is a fantastic place for a family visit, with lots of space to run around and exciting habitats to explore. There are many beautiful botanical gardens all over the world and if you ever get a chance to visit them, then you should not miss this opportunity.

We always plan a visit to the arboretum during the spring or autumn seasons. Fortunately, we already visited some beautiful gardens and loved them all. You can read our experience of visiting the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh and Westonbirt National Arboretum.
