Holi for Indians Abroad

Holi, the festival of colours is here. And this year, being an Indian abroad, I am wondering how I am going to celebrate this festival. During this time of the year, Indians, especially North Indians celebrate Holi with full excitement. Being a North Indian, I am really going to miss all the fun this year. And it’s a fact that if you choose to live abroad, then festivals like Holi are not going to be the same as they were before.

The mere thought of celebrating Holi without friends and family triggered the desi avatar of the amateur poet in me. Allow me to share some lines in Hindi about how a pardesi or NRI feels during this festival, especially if they are just settling in a new country. A disclaimer though - not all NRI’s feel the same during this festival and it varies a lot from person to person.

परदेस में कैसी होगी होली

फिर आया रंगों का त्यौहार,
लाया खुशियों का उपहार।
गुझिया, पापड़, चिप्स, कचौरी,
और वो रंग भरी पिचकारी।

लेकिन परदेस में कैसी होगी होली,
जहाँ ना होगी दोस्तों की टोली।

जब देस में होंगे सब रंगरेज़,
हम खुश होंगे ये सब देख।
याद करेंगे होली के वो पकवान,
घर आने वाले वो ढेरों मेहमान।

लेकिन परदेस में कैसी होगी होली,
जहाँ ना होगी दोस्तों की टोली।

बाज़ार में फिर से रौनक लग जायेगी,
ढेरों दुकानें रंग और ग़ुलाल से सज जायेंगी।
देस में सब झूमेंगे मस्ती में रंग लगा,
ख़ुश होंगे बड़ों का आशीर्वाद लेकर और सबको गले लगा।

लेकिन परदेस में कैसी होगी होली,
जहाँ ना होगी दोस्तों की टोली।

अब याद आती है वो बचपन की होली,
दोस्तों के साथ वो मस्ती और ठिठोली।
ख़ुशी का माहौल, वो घर आने वाले मेहमान,
रंग, ग़ुलाल और माँ के हाथ के पकवान।

लेकिन परदेस में कैसी होगी होली,
जहाँ ना होगी दोस्तों की टोली।
